No Face Costume

Description

Hmmm... just where does one submit a costume in DA? It's an Anime/Fan Art sort of thing, but it's not digital art or what you would call traditional art... doesn't really fit under any of the "artisan" categories... Sculpture?... nah... so let's just go with "miscellaneous"...

Anyway, this weekend was the the big Anime Weekend Atlanta convention, and my 14-year-old daughter wanted to go as No Face from the movie Spirited Away (one of my personal favorites!). After a lot of mental calisthenics, I came up with making the mask using a sort of papier maché material, and added about 5 yards of black fabric, plus some cardboard and a LOT of duct tape to create a sort of helmet to hold the mask up over her head. Her face is actually peering through some black mesh right under the chin of the mask. The whole thing was just under 7 feet tall when she put it on.

This was our second year attending the AWA, and it was pretty fun, but we couldn't walk 20 feet without somebody stopping us for No Face's picture, or coming up to hug him/her or ask if he/she had eaten any good frogs lately. As the designer and engineer, I was pretty proud, but it was really just fun for me to watch my kid having so much fun with her two best buddies (who went as Kisa from Fruits Basket, and Lee from Gun Grave).

Now I gotta figure out how I'm going to build a Totoro costume for next year!
